biography
Adolf Arzberger, born in 1910, grew up as one of five children and still remembers the hardships of the First World War and the inflation period afterwards. His father was employed by the Federal Forests and was involved in the operation of the Brandenburger Trift, the construction, fire and reconstruction of one of the hermitages. After school, Adolf worked for his father and provided the family with his wages during the bad times. He reports on how the economy slowly improved and on the depressing conditions after 1933. Conscripted into the military, Adolf was involved in the campaign against France and was then embarked in Augsburg (see the detailed report by Stefan Hollenthoner, chronicler project Memory 2000) about the Danube to Crimea. From there he came to Stalingrad and was one of the last to be flown out from there - due to illness. His unit was wiped out. In 1947 he got married and was busy building huts. At the time of the interview in 1986, he had already been retired for 17 years.
